Unit 13 summary

Spelling choices for /oo/ sound: oo and ou

In this unit you have learned that there are lots of different ways we can create the long /oo/ sound with letters and split digraphs:

Think back - help with spelling rules
  • The long /oo/ is usually spelled with the letters oo
  • It can also be spelled using the letters ou, ui, ue, ew
  • And the split digraphs u-e and o-e
  • Sometimes, we use the letters oug
  • Rarely, we use the letters omb.

You’ve also learned that the letters oo can create a short vowel sound and that same short vowel sound can be produced by different letters which include u, ou, or oe.

In short, there’s a lot to take in! So feel free to go through the unit again if you need to.

The Spellzone interactive course is intended to be used online and may not be printed.

"Thank goodness for Spellzone during this remote learning phase. The site is easy for students to navigate independently and they're really enjoying the activities and spelling games. You get an awful lot for your money with Spellzone. Really reassuring is the very prompt response with helpdesk queries. I've very rarely needed the helpdesk, but when I have, the issue has been addressed and sorted within a very short time."
