There are three ways of spelling the /shƏn/ sound: tion, cian and sion. |
1. The most common way is tion. It is often used if the root word ends in t or te.
invent > invention | inject > injection | hesitate > hesitation |
I work in politics, I am a politician |
I work in music, I am a musician |
I work with electrics, I am an electrician |
3. After l, r and s, use sion.
compulsion | version | mission |
4. And if the root word would have ended in d or se
expanse > expansion | extend > extension | tense > tension |
Though not in the examples attention and intention! |
5. And if the root word would have ended -ss or –mit
discuss > discussion | permit > permission |
6. After the letter n, some words have tion and some sion – you will need to learn these.
