3) Words ending in ine

The ine ending is used to spell three different sounds:

In wine, the e on the end makes i say its long /English language long i sound/ sound.

In engine, the second syllable of the word is the unstressed syllable.
Its vowel is a weak sound, rather like a short /ĭ/.

In magazine, the last syllable has a long sound // sound.
