The ine ending creates three different sounds:

wine | engine | magazine |
In wine, the split digraph i-e means that the i says its name.
In engine, it creates a weak vowel sound in the second syllable, like a short /i/.
In magazine, it creates a long /e/ sound in the final syllable.

In these words the e on the end makes i say its long /ī/ sound, as in wine. | In these words the last syllable is unstressed and has a weak sound, rather like a short /ĭ/, as in engine. | In these words the last syllable has a long sound /ē/ sound, as in magazine. |
