Unit 9 summary

Suffixes: why we need to double letters, change them or drop 'e'

You’ve learned loads in this unit, so much so that you may need a quick reminder:

Think back - help with spelling rules
  • Vowel suffixes begin with a vowel
  • Consonant suffixes begin with a consonant
  • Sometimes adding suffixes means we drop the final e in a root word
  • Sometimes adding suffixes means we change the root word
  • Sometimes we have to double the final letter before adding the suffix
  • These changes depend on whether you are attaching a vowel or a suffix consonant
  • There are exceptions to every rule here!

The Spellzone interactive course is intended to be used online and may not be printed.

One of the students has put in a huge amount of effort in completing Spellzone at least 3 times a week since his arrival with us in January. Looking at his scores after the latest GL testing, his standardised score has risen from 99 to 131. This is a truly phenomenal result. I just wanted to share the best result I have ever seen.
