linear Linear motion is moving in a straight line in one direction. *
reciprocating Reciprocating motion is moving back and forth, up and down, in a straight line. *
oscillating Oscillating motion is moving back and forth in an arc. *
rotary Rotary motion is moving in one direction around a central point or pivot. *
mechanism Dampers help to control shock in a vehicles suspension mechanism.
velocity Velocity is speed in a particular direction. *
efficiency The efficiency of a mechanism is reduced by friction. *
crank A crank and slider converts rotary motion into reciprocating motion, or the other way round.. *
reverse You will need to reverse your car out of the drive.
linkage A linkage uses is a special lever that changes the direction of motion. *
cam A cam and follower converts rotary motion into reciprocating motion. *
follower A cam and follower converts rotary motion into reciprocating motion. *
eccentric Eccentric means off centre, so an eccentric cam is a circular cam that runs off centre. *
dwell Dwell means a period of pause when looking at the movement of a cam and follower. *
lift A cam's lift is the amount the cam's follower will rise and fall. *
camshaft A camshaft is a rotating axle that cams are fixed to. *
pulley A pulley can be used to lift a heavy weight.
belt A belt can be used with two pulley wheels to transfer rotary motion and change its speed. *
gear A gear is a toothed wheel that meshes with another gear to create a gear train. *
fulcrum A fulcrum is the pivot point around which a lever rotates or oscillates. *
