About This Spelling List: Open Syllables (SGJS)

Long vowel sounds a,e,i,o,u are spelt with just an a, e, i, o, u when they are in open syllables. An open syllable is when the vowel is the last sound you can hear in the syllable and so it makes its´ long sound.
