Many adjectives end with ent or ant. These words can be made into abstract nouns by changing ent endings into ence and ant endings into ance. e.g. different goes to difference, distant goes to distance. If a word also has a related word family word that ends in -ation, then it takes -ant / - ancy /-ial. But not every -ant word has an -ation word related to it! ent, ence, ency is usually used after a soft c, soft g or qu words.

independent In the US in the 1920s, the term flapper described a fashionable and independent young woman. *
abundant The field was abundant with wildlife.
arrogant Being arrogant is an unattractive quality. *
expectant His attitude was very expectant.
observant The security guard was very observant.
hesitant John was hesitant to stand up and speak.
tolerant The daycare owner was very tolerant.
decent The fish was a decent size so we kept it.
frequent How frequent is this bus? *
assistant The shop assistant was unhelpful and rude.
substance A substance made as a result of a chemical reaction. *
