Word for Wednesday: Budget

"Bold in building the aspirations of working people" is how the UK Chancellor announced his Summer 2015 budget today. While many will agree with his sentiment, no doubt many, many more will not, especially as they do their sums to understand the implications today's announcement will have on their daily lives. Whether we like it or not, it is a fact of life that some manage their budgets successfully, while some do not.

Budget is a late Middle English word which originates from the Old French 'bouge', meaning 'leather bag'. While one can picture an individual opening a small leather bag or purse to settle a bill, it would be very difficult to imagine a country doing the same for its complex annual budget running into billions.

Perhaps a return to the days of Robin Hood would make things a little clearer?
