Word for Wednesday: Deal


Here in the UK there has been a lot of talk today about a 'Deal'.

The Spellzone Dictionary defines the word as 'an agreement between parties (usually arrived at after discussion) fixing obligations of each'. In the context of today's news, some would argue that this word has not been used appropriately.

The origin of deal is rather fittingly pan -European. From Old English dæl meaning 'part, share, quantity, amount', from Proto-Germanic dailaz (from Old Norse deild, Old Frisian del, Dutch deel, Old High German and German teil, Gothic dails 'part, share'), from PIE dail- 'to divide' (from Old Church Slavonic delu "part," and Lithuanian dalis).
