3 Spelling Tasks to Set Your Students on Spellzone

blog home

There are 3 types of task on Spellzone: the Spelling Ability Test, a Spellzone course unit, and a word list task.

Teachers can set classroom and homework tasks for individual students, for a class, or for the whole school. Tasks can be set alongside or instead of the Course Pathway.

How to set the Spelling Ability Test as a task

If your student is working on their Course Pathway regularly, it is likely that their Spellzone Score will be up-to-date.

However, in some instances, you might want to reset the test:

  • If you would like to give your students a fresh start, for example, at the beginning of a new school year
  • If you want a score for comparison purposes, for example, some schools set the test at the beginning of the year and again at the end of the year so that they can compare the two results
  • If a student achieves a surprising result, for example, if they score higher or lower than you expect

To set the Spelling Ability Test as a task:

  • Log into Spellzone
  • Click on the Tasks tab
  • Click on Create a new task
  • Choose Spelling Ability Test from the dropdown menu. You can also add any Spellzone unit to the task by clicking on the + icon
  • Choose between homework task and classroom task
  • Set Start date and Deadline
  • Select who the task is for from the dropdown menu, filtering by class if necessary
  • Add any further information for your students in the provided box
  • Click on Submit

Bear in mind that resetting the test will also reset the student’s Course Pathway.

How to set a Spellzone unit as a task

If your student answers the questions linked to a particular unit correctly in the Spelling Ability Test, that unit will not appear on their Course Pathway. If, after comparing their pathway to the National Curriculum, you would like to fill any gaps in their learning, you can set the relevant unit as a task. The student will then be prompted to complete the unit alongside their Course Pathway.

To set a Spellzone unit as a task:

  • Log into Spellzone
  • Click on the Tasks tab
  • Click on Create a new task
  • Choose the relevant unit from the dropdown. You can also add further units or the Spelling Ability Test to the task by clicking on the + icon
  • Choose between homework task and classroom task
  • Set Start date and Deadline
  • Select who the task is for from the dropdown menu, filtering by class if necessary
  • Add any further information for your students in the provided box
  • Click on Submit

"Spellzone fits in beautifully with our Scope and Sequence of Phonological Awareness and Spelling. It also aligns perfectly with the four areas of spelling knowledge and uses the Brain, Ears, Eyes approach to learning spelling."
Thank you!
