Keywords-atoms

Atom The smallest part of an element that can still be recognised as that element. *
element A substance made up of only one type of atom. An element can't be broken down chemically into simple substances. *
compound A substance made when two or more different elements are chemically bonded together. *
nucleus The very small and dense central part of an atom that contains protons and neutrons. *
electron A subatomic particle with a negative charge. These are found orbiting the nucleus of atoms or ions in shells. *
neutron A dense subatomic particle found in the nucleus of an atom. It is electrically neutral, carrying no charge. *
proton A tiny positive subatomic particle found inside the nucleus of an atom. *
reactant A substance we start with before a chemical reaction takes place. *
products A substance made as a result of a chemical reaction. *
mixture When some elements or compounds are mixed together and intermingle but do not react together (i.e. no new substance is made). A mixture is not a pure substance. *
filtration The technique used to separate substances that are insoluble in a particular solvent from those that are soluble. *
crystallisation British English spelling Separating a soluble solid from a solvent, for example, salt (sodium chloride) from salt solution. *
distillation Separating a solvent from soluble solids dissolved in the solvent by successive evaporation and condensation. Seawater is distilled to obtain pure water. *
chromatography The process of separating dissolved substances by running a solvent along a material (e.g. absorbent paper). *
