Spelling the word endings le, al, el

Teaching point The ending le is the most common one to use after these letters:
b c d f g k p st t z

That gives you these letter patterns:

ble cle dle fle gle kle ple stle tle zle

The le ending is never used after these letters:

m n r v w

The table below gives you some examples of words ending in:

ble cle dle fle gle kle ple stle tle zle

Notice that some words have a double consonant before the le ending. This is to protect the short vowel sound in the stressed syllable. The consonant l in the ending does not count as part of a double consonant pattern - it belongs to the le ending.
