Words with silent letters e.g. wrap, comb, sign, knight

In this unit, we discovered that silent letters in words are not just there to make spelling difficult. They can actually reveal interesting things about the word itself:

Think back - help with spelling rules
  • That its pronunciation has changed over time
  • Where it comes from.

Or are there to do a job:

  • Make the preceding vowel say its name
  • Keep a vowel sound short
  • Change a hard to a soft sound.
