The letter y in the middle of a word often represents the long /i/ sound, as in rhyme, style, and cycle. It can also appear in words with Greek or Latin roots, such as psychology and hygiene.
Notice how in psychology, the y in the middle makes a long /i/ sound, while the y at the end makes a short /i/ sound.
