Information for parents of young learners

We are often asked if Spellzone is suitable for young children. The answer is yes!

SpellzoneĀ is adaptable for students of all abilities and many teachers use Spellzone successfully with 7-11 year olds. Parents need no expert knowledge in teaching spelling as the Spellzone courses follow a logical progression and all spelling rules are clearly explained at each stage.

To help you to get started, the Spellzone Spelling Ability Test provides a baseline 'Spellzone Score' and creates a personal 'Course Pathway' for each student which may include units from the Spellzone Starter Course and the Spellzone Main Course.

The testĀ is repeated at key points and the scores and pathways updated according to the progress made.

The Spellzone Main Course assumes that users that can spell phonically simple words with short vowel sounds and hard consonants (for example, run, sit, stand, jump). The course follows a logical progression and all spelling rules are clearly explained at each stage. There are extensive word lists for each rule with practice in the form of games and interactive tests.

The Spellzone Starter Course is an entry level resource provided to help learners who are not yet at that level. These include primary pupils, older students who are still struggling with basic spelling concepts, lower level users of English such as ESL and EAL students.

The Spellzone Starter Course teaches the basic phonic rules of how to spell short vowel sounds and hard consonants with just one letter. All word lists follow a structured, cumulative approach. Each page deals first with sounds new to that page and then include sounds from earlier lists. Only those sounds that have already been introduced are included.

"Thank goodness for Spellzone during this remote learning phase. The site is easy for students to navigate independently and they're really enjoying the activities and spelling games. You get an awful lot for your money with Spellzone. Really reassuring is the very prompt response with helpdesk queries. I've very rarely needed the helpdesk, but when I have, the issue has been addressed and sorted within a very short time."
