The /f/, /l/, /s/, /z/ and /k/ sounds are usually spelt as ff, ll, ss, zz and ck if they come straight after a single vowel letter in short words. Exceptions: if, pal, us, bus, yes.

	off	We set off from Florida for a week's cruise.
	well	An efficient machine works well.
	buzz	A wasp buzzed around my head.
	back	Wait here until I get back.
	miss	I will miss you when you go away.
