Spellzone in Primary, Junior or Elementary schools

We are sometimes asked if Spellzone is suitable for use in primary, junior or elementary schools.
The answer is yes!

"The pupils in Key Stage One really enjoyed the interactive aspects of Spellzone, especially the spelling lists with games. They identified with the gaming approach and so they are determined to achieve high scores whilst relishing the language learning process."

Primary Teacher, Ghana

Spellzone is adaptable for students of all abilities and is suitable for supervision by teaching assistants. No previous experience of teaching English spelling is required, as The Spelling Ability Test provides a baseline 'Spellzone Score' and creates a personal 'Course Pathway' for each student based on their result.

While the Spellzone Main Course assumes that users that can spell phonically simple words with short vowel sounds and hard consonants (for example, run, sit, stand, jump), the Spellzone Starter Course is an entry level resource provided to help learners who are not yet at that level. These include primary pupils, older students who are still struggling with basic spelling concepts, and lower level users of English such as ESL and EAL students.

The Spellzone Starter Course teaches the basic phonic rules of how to spell short vowel sounds and hard consonants with just one letter.  All word lists follow a structured, cumulative approach. Each page deals first with sounds new to that page and then include sounds from earlier lists. Only those sounds that have already been introduced are included.

Teachers have found that the ability to use Spellzone at home reinforces learning and makes it popular with parents who are keen to support their child's school work.

Care has been taken not to include any inappropriate material. The Spellzone resources DO NOT contain content of a sexual or violent nature.

Spellzone in Secondary or High schools

"We are a K-12 school and see the potential for this to differentiate spelling across a wide age range. It fits in beautifully with our Scope and Sequence of Phonological Awareness and Spelling. It also aligns perfectly with the four areas of spelling knowledge and uses the Brain, Ears, Eyes approach to learning spelling. Your customer service has been outstanding from the other side of the world! Thank you!"

Teacher, Australia

Many students still need help with spelling at the secondary or high school stage of their education. However, most of the spelling software available is aimed at younger pupils and teenagers find these too childish. Spellzone was written especially to overcome this problem.

Spellzone can be used in Learning Support Departments and is particularly suitable for dyslexic students. It can also be used in regular English classes with other pupils needing help with spelling, for example those whose first language is not English. A translation feature enables them to see a word list in any one of 92 languages and the Spellzone dictionary allows learners to check the meaning of most unfamiliar words.

Despite the increase in computer-based work, where spellcheckers are available, many assignments and most exams are still handwritten. Recently many exam boards have said they are tightening their standards and marking down for poor spelling. Therefore the teaching of spelling is still very important.

Spellzone is very suitable for supervision by teaching assistants. No previous experience of teaching English spelling is required, as all teaching points are presented clearly in a logical progression. Teachers have found that the ability to use Spellzone at home reinforces learning and makes it popular with parents who are keen to support their son or daughter's school work. See case study.
