10 Things You Can Do with a Word List

Did you know there are over a million word lists on Spellzone? You can find them on our Word Lists homepage by using the search bar or following the links on the green toolbar at the top of the page. 

Today we are sharing 10 things you can do with any of the word lists on Spellzone:
 

  1. What does the word mean? 
    Click on a word to see its dictionary definition. Scroll down for synonyms, scrabble scores, and other lists the word appears in. 
     
  2. How do you pronounce the word? 
    Click on the speaker icon to hear the word and the example sentence spoken. 
     
  3. What does the word mean in my language? 
    Did you know Spellzone word lists can be translated into over 90 different language? Choose your language from the dropdown menu at the top right-hand corner of the list. In some cases, you may be able to hear the words spoken in your language too. 
     
  4. This is not quite what I’m looking for…
    Found a list that’s almost perfect but not exactly what you need? You can copy and edit any word list on Spellzone by clicking ‘Copy’ in the blue box to the right of the list. You can then edit the title and description, click on the red crosses to remove words, use the green up and down arrows to reorder the words, choose alternate sentences from the dropdown lists, add new sentences by clicking on the green plus icons, and add new words by typing them into the box at the bottom of the page. 
     
  5. Can I share this list with others? 
    Click on the down arrow next to ‘Share’ on the right of the word list to find the list’s number and QR code. Other users can search the number or scan the code in order to open it on their own browser. 
     
  6. How do I practise the words in this list? 
    Click on the ‘Learn’ tab above the list to practise the words in a Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check activity. If you are a teacher, you can also set a Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check activity as a task for your students by clicking on ‘Set as task’ in the blue box to the right of the list.
     
  7. Can I practise with my friends? 
    Click on the ‘Games’ tab above the list to use the words in a variety of fun spelling games. Any time you see a green 'M' icon, you can play against another user. If you are a teacher, you can also set any of the spelling games as a task for your students by clicking on ‘Set as task’ in the blue box to the right of the list.
     
  8. How do I test myself on the words in this list?
    Click on the ‘Test’ to test yourself on the words in a Listen and Spell activity. If you are a teacher, you can also set a Listen and Spell activity as a task for your students by clicking on ‘Set as task’ in the blue box to the right of the list.
     
  9. I want to practise these words but I won’t have internet access for a little while…
    Click on the ‘Print’ and ‘Write’ tabs to find printable activities using these words for offline practice. 
     
  10. Can I make my own word lists? 
    Of course! Click on the ‘Create a List’ tab on the green toolbar at the top of the page to make a list with your own words and sentences.
